Mariupol State University Library
After the war began on February 24, 2022, seven staffers of Mariupol State University (MSU) were killed, and all University buildings were destroyed entirely. MSU has temporarily relocated to Kyiv with about 70% of the teaching and administrative staff. Their partners from the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture have kindly provided MSU with one of their buildings, as well as student accommodation. MSU resumed distance learning through an online platform.
MSU lost its entire library, and is now trying to replenish it.
The city, founded in 1778, lost its citizens, buildings, theater, and the University. Out of 460,000 people, less than 100,000 live now in Mariupol.
The Russian army captured Mariupol in May 2022. The battle lasted three months, and the city is in ruins now. According to the UN, 90% of the city's hospitals were destroyed as well as 90% of the buildings. You can learn what happened to the city by watching for free the Academy Award®-winning FRONTLINE/AP documentary "20 Days in Mariupol".
Zavtra Project partnered with MSU to replace the books that were lost due to Russian aggression. The new library in Kyiv will be accessible to everyone, including children.
